Happiness is a choice
What is Happiness? Happiness is an emotion associated with feelings ranging from contentment and
satisfaction to bliss and intense joy. (From wikipedia)
I have asked this question to few of the people I know and these are some of the answers:
My friend said that she was happy when she had money. Her present financial situation is not so good. She is striving to make ends meet. She is heavily in debt. So it would not be surprising why she thinks that having money would make her happy.
My brother said that happiness is having peace of mind. He used to be mentally disturbed. He was always seeing horrible images in his mind. He was always fighting with his own thoughts. He was able to perform all the necessary daily tasks, earn good amount of money, but never had the peace of mind until recently. Now he is at peace with himself. He finally realized that all those images he saw were not real but were the products of his mind. So it would not be surprising why he thinks that having peace of mind would make him happy.
My mom said that she is happy when she is giving. Giving help to people makes her happy. Giving support to people makes her happy. Giving money to people in need makes her happy. I have never seen anyone who knows how to be happy like her. She was born in a wealthy family, had a great father, but no so great mother. Her mother was not a caring and loving mother. Her husband is not a great husband. He doesn’t care much for his family. My mom was cheated out of her inheritance by her brother. In spite of all that she always manages to be happy.
I have seen her watching movies and laughing by herself. I have seen her sitting by herself basking in the sun and watching the plants in the garden. I have seldom seen her complain. She is a true example of a person who knows how to be happy.
I think that I am happiest when I am giving love to other people. I really feel great when I am doing something good for someone and I see his or her face lights up. I love the feeling of joy I get when I give help to someone who needs it. I think that happiness that come from having stuff doesn’t last that long, but happiness that comes from giving last longer.
We all want to be happy. The reason we strive for wealth, relationships, fame and status is because we believe that having those things will make us happy. Is that true? If it is true why are there wealthy people who are unhappy and miserable? Why are there famous people who are miserable and addicted to drugs and alcohol? Why even when we are with our loved ones, we are still unhappy?
Happiness seems to be different things for different people. To look for happiness from external sources would not be wise because we have no control over external circumstances. True and lasting happiness must come from deep within us.
There are few simple things that you could do to make yourself happy:
- Cultivate a sense of humor. It will not only make you happier, but it will help to improve your relationships with others.
- Be appreciative of what you have. People who are appreciative of what they have are happier than those who are not appreciative.
- Exercise would help to release endorphin, which would make you feel good.
- Watching funny movies would help.
- Playing with dogs or kids would be great.
- Avoid watching or listening to news would definitely help.
- Accomplish a goal that you set would give you feeling of contentment, thus making you happier.
- Concentrate on all the good things in your lives and stop concentrating on the negative events.
- Using tool like the release technique which will help remove the negative feelings you have been harboring all your life, thus making you happy.
- Live in the present moment. If you always live in the *Now*, you can not be unhappy. Unhappiness is a result of dwelling on the past events and/or worrying about the future circumstances.
Happiness is a choice, and the power to choose is in your hands.
