How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk is an excellent communication tool kit based on a series of workshops developed by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. Faber and Mazlish (coauthors of Siblings Without Rivalry) provide a step-by-step approach to improving relationships in your house. The “Reminder” pages, helpful cartoon illustrations, and excellent exercises will improve your ability as a parent to talk and problem-solve with your children. The book can be used alone or in parenting groups, and the solid tools provided are appropriate for kids of all ages.

5 Stars Fantastic way to talk to kids Interesting new concepts that I’ve tried to put into practice. My 2-year old seems to respond well to the author’s suggestions of validating/describing emotions or feelings instead of labeling, criticizing or solving.

5 Stars Creating intimacy and transparency with your children The authors provide a useful guide to parents, by offering practical and applicable methods that will have a positive impact on their relationship with their children. The material presented is a wake-up call to parents, as it explains that parents need to be aware of children’s feelings. Parents must promote cooperation and should inspire, praise and support independence in their children. The book presents an excellent approach to parenthood and is an easy-read. A good addition to your parenting library, this book offers parents an important set of tools for a lifetime of intimate communication, not only between parents and their children, but for your child’s future family as well.

“The Art of Conscious Parenting”

2 Stars Not impressed by the philosophy. The writers claim that children will naturally come to the right conclusions about how they should behave if simply listened to, and allowed to feel whatever they are naturally feeling. This simply isn’t true. Most children need more guidance. I agree it should be gently done, but I disagree that parents should never lecture or “preach to” their children. If you never tell them what is good, how can they choose to be good? Overall, the writers had good intentions, but their technique is a bit on the floofy-feely side. The result would surely be completly undisciplined children. A better book is “1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12″ by Thomas W. Phelan. It is still gentle, but firm. Kids aren’t left to flounder about how they ought to behave to be happy.

5 Stars Great book for any relationship My husband has read this way before he met me and I have no doubt that this helped him become a better husband. I am reading this now — we are expecting our first child — but this book is also giving me insights on my marriage as well. Highly recommended.

5 Stars Great cartoons! This book has the power to redirect a family, a community, or even a nation.

“To learn a new language is not easy. For one thing, you will always speak with an accent…. But for your children, it will be their native tongue!”

“We want to break the cycle of unhelpful talk that has been handed down from generation to generation, and pass on a different legacy to our children–a way of communicating that they can use for the rest of their lives, with their friends, their co-workers, their parents, their mates, and one day with children of their own.”

5 Stars Awaken out of constant automatic thinking
Many people are not at peace because they have negative thoughts running through their minds constantly and automatically. These thoughts trigger negative emotions. This book is about awakening out of that constant thought stream. This can be done by accepting rather than resisting the present moment. The result is a sense of peace because the negative emotions then no longer get triggered.

2 Stars A New Earth Book
Another preach advice to you book. Has some good advice but found it rather boring reading.

5 Stars eye-opening!
Like a lot of people, I was exposed to this book via Oprah. Not directly, but due to the fact that so many people started talking about it after she had the author on her show.

I am really glad to have read the book. It has an interesting take on a number of things, “sin” being the first which really caught my attention. Much different from the Southern Baptist culture that I was raised in. Same for his view of what “Heaven” is.

You may not agree with everything he says, but I this is a book which will certainly make you think. For me, it made me realize that I wasn’t alone and not as crazy as my Southern Baptist relatives think. That alone was worth the price.

Overall, good thoughts about being “one with life” that I think will be beneficial to all people, regardless of religious affiliation.

5 Stars a fresh perspective and life changing book
i enjoyed this book immensely and plan to read it again and again. the ideas presented were fresh, simple, logical, and thought provoking. i don’t think i’ve ever read a book where i had so many “Aha!” moments.

5 Stars Extraordinary Book IMHO
Stumbled on this book quite by chance – on (of all places) a financial forum where I’m a regular in a string with members listing their favorite books. A New Earth was the only one I didn’t already recognize, so I picked it up from the local library just to see what the fuss was about.

It was hard to start, but for me, it is one of the most important books I have ever read, and the most important in about 10 years at least. After 55 years on this earth, I was surprised to learn more about myself and understanding others than I imagined possible, and the learning has only begun. I am a newbie to this sort of topic so I found it a tough read, very different from the mainstream American cultural mindset, but if you’re open to it, it is a most enlightening experience. I also watched the Oprah webinars with Tolle which also helped me understand it better. I have since bought my own copy, as I expect to refer to it often. A remarkable book…

“Clear some space on your bookshelf for Mitch Albom’s, Have a Little Faith, the story of a faith journey that could become a classic. Those who were born into faith, have lost faith, or are still searching will all be engaged and challenged by this powerful story of “finding faith” in relationships with others and with something greater than ourselves. Never satisfied with easy answers or soft platitudes, Mitch explores some of life’s greatest mysteries and unanswered questions with great honesty, depth and self reflection. ”
–Jim Wallis, CEO and Founder of Sojourners and author of The Great Awakening

What if our beliefs were not what divided us, but what pulled us together?

In Have a Little Faith, Mitch Albom offers a beautifully written story of a remarkable eight-year journey between two worlds–two men, two faiths, two communities–that will inspire readers everywhere.

Albom’s first nonfiction book since Tuesdays with Morrie, Have a Little Faith begins with an unusual request: an eighty-two-year-old rabbi from Albom’s old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy.

Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he’d left years ago. Meanwhile, closer to his current home, Albom becomes involved with a Detroit pastor–a reformed drug dealer and convict–who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof.

Moving between their worlds, Christian and Jewish, African-American and white, impoverished and well-to-do, Albom observes how these very different men employ faith similarly in fighting for survival: the older, suburban rabbi embracing it as death approaches; the younger, inner-city pastor relying on it to keep himself and his church afloat.

As America struggles with hard times and people turn more to their beliefs, Albom and the two men of God explore issues that perplex modern man: how to endure when difficult things happen; what heaven is; intermarriage; forgiveness; doubting God; and the importance of faith in trying times. Although the texts, prayers, and histories are different, Albom begins to recognize a striking unity between the two worlds–and indeed, between beliefs everywhere.

In the end, as the rabbi nears death and a harsh winter threatens the pastor’s wobbly church, Albom sadly fulfills the rabbi’s last request and writes the eulogy. And he finally understands what both men had been teaching all along: the profound comfort of believing in something bigger than yourself.

Have a Little Faith is a book about a life’s purpose; about losing belief and finding it again; about the divine spark inside us all. It is one man’s journey, but it is everyone’s story.

Ten percent of the profits from this book will go to charity, including The Hole In The Roof Foundation, which helps refurbish places of worship that aid the homeless.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars A Tale of Three Journeys of Faith
In “Have a Little Faith”, Mitch Albom, the author of such best-sellers as “Tuesdays with Morrie” and “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” has once again hit a home run. This true-life tale begins with a question. An elderly Rabbi named Albert Lewis asks Albom to give his eulogy. Taken aback by the question, he asks the Rabbi, who he refers to as “Reb” if he is dying. “Not yet,” he replies. In many ways, “Have a Little Faith” is about that “not yet.” It is about the journey that Albom takes to get to know this Rabbi better as well as the spiritual journey that takes place within Albom as a result. Interspersed in the story is the tale of another man of God, Pastor Henry Covington.

Covington has taken an unlikely route to the ministry and ministers to unlikely Christians. At first, the reader will wonder how these two tales are connected. The story of an upstanding Rabbi facing his decline, and the tale of a young drug dealer seem to have little in common. Albom, always the consummate story teller, has done a fine job of interweaving them into a beautiful portrait of what it means to serve God. The reader will have to wait for those connections to make themselves clear, but the wait is definitely worth it.

At the time when Albom is asked to write and deliver Lewis’ eulogy, he hadn’t really been around him in twenty-five years. Even as a child, he had attempted to run away from him. “He was tall, six foot one, and I felt tiny in his presence. When he looked down through his black-rimmed glasses, I was certain he could view all my sins and shortcomings. So I ran. I ran until he couldn’t see me anymore.” As an adult, Albom had moved away both figuratively and literally. He decides he needs to get to know Lewis better in order to do him justice in this final farewell. What Albom thinks will be a few meetings turns out to be eight years of interaction. Albom deftly shares stories from long ago with lessons from the “Reb” now until the reader is granted a very moving picture of him. In one particularly insightful passage, Albom tells of the Rabbi’s pain when his young daughter died. Albom asked him that unanswerable question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” he honestly answered “No one knows.” Yet, this never caused the Rabbi to question his faith in God. Atheism held no appeal for him. He stated, “It is far more comforting to think God listened and said no, than to think that nobody’s out there.” The Rabbi also shared his great secret of happiness with Albom. It’s very simple, really – be satisfied and be grateful for what you have.

“Have a Little Faith” is about the journey – of these two men of God who Albom rights about and about Albom’s own journey. Yet, readers will find their own journey in these pages as well, for humans, regardless of their faith traditions, reach out for the God that created them. We are always searching and hoping to discover more. In his conclusion, Albom writes that “it hit me, finally, that this was the whole point of my time with the Reb and Henry: not the conclusion, but the search, the study, the journey to belief.” For me, reading and experiencing “Have a Little Faith” was one more step on that journey.

5 Stars Worth Every Penny
I loved this book. I learned a lot about the Jewish faith and just faith in general. I’m beginning to think that when God wants a story told, he calls Mitch Albom. I’ve never encountered anybody like he has…Morrie and Al Lewis and Pastor Henry. I’m almost envious of the guy. I guess as an avid reader, I sort of know them but it isn’t quite the same.

Anyway, the book made me laugh and cry just like the rest of the books I’ve read by Albom but none of them made me sob like this one did. I had to put the book down for a bit after I read the eulogy. It was so beautifully written and after reading the entire story, I couldn’t help but fall apart.

It took me a day to read it with a few breaks. Once you start, you won’t stop until the last page. Unless you’re like me and have to take a break after the eulogy.

Fantastic book. I’m going to read it again in a couple of weeks. I bet I get more out of it than I did the first time around.

I had to wait almost a month for this order to come from Amazon. That was the only part that was a drag.

5 Stars This book will give you faith….
Simply describing Mitch Albom’s “have a little faith: a true story” as inspiring does not do it justice. It is a book I would highly recommend to book clubs, for rainy days, escapism, soul-searching, and one not to put away in an old tupperware tub – the reader will definitely want to read it again and again.

It is a story that reaches across generations, and will continue to do so. No matter what the situation the reader has been in or witnessed, there will be a connection, one that will both awaken the mind and the heart.

Here’s but one of many brilliant examples:

“But what if someone from another faith won’t recognize yours? Or wants you dead for it?

`That is not faith. That is hate.’ He sighed. `And if you ask me, God sits up there and cries when that happens.’”

In a world where those who live within feel an increasing loss of control on a number of levels, this book connects us all. All as humans, all as individual souls, all who at some point in our lives have had at least a little faith. Perhaps if we continue to do so, the world will be a better place. It is not enough for us to wait for the next tragedy to do our part. We need to embrace our humanity and share this world the way it was meant to be shared and do so on a daily basis.

A wonderful wonderful book. Well done, Mr. Albom!

5 Stars Mitch Albom is one of a kind
If you appreciated Mitch Albom’s perceptiveness and sensitivity interviewing Morrie in “Tuesdays With Morrie,” you will also love those same qualities in “Have a Little Faith” – whatever your faith. Thank goodness Mr. Albom didn’t restrict his career to writing only about sports.

5 Stars Classic Mitch Albom
Mitch Albom’s newest story “Have a Little Faith” is the first book I read on my new Kindle DX. It is a poignant reflection of the author’s journey to learn enough about a man to deliver that man’s eulogy. The eulogy is for the author’s Reverend, a man he had known his entire life and “The Reb” himself asks Mr. Albom to say his final farewell and makes the request eight years prior to his death. In the spirit of “Tuesday’s with Morrie” Mitch Albom begins meeting with “The Reb” on a regular basis and in the process of learning about the Reb, he is reminded to look at the world beyond his own experience. He meets another man along his journey, another preacher who reminds him to open his mind and his heart. Have a Little Faith is a wonderful story, it made me cry at times and reflect on my own relationships reminding me to listen differently and learn from the experiences of others.

Ekhart Tolle’s message is simple: living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle’s clear writing, supportive voice, and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who’s ever wondered what exactly “living in the now” means. Foremost, Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book, readers are already holding the world in a different container–more conscious of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine peace and happiness.

Tolle packs a lot of information and inspirational ideas into The Power of Now. (Topics include the source of Chi, enlightened relationships, creative use of the mind, impermanence, and the cycle of life.) Thankfully, he’s added markers that symbolize “break time.” This is when readers should close the book and mull over what they just read. As a result, The Power of Now reads like the highly acclaimed A Course in Miracles–a spiritual guidebook that has the potential to inspire just as many study groups and change just as many lives for the better. –Gail Hudson

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars A timeless book of presence
This easy to follow guide to enlightenment boils down to one simple message: you are not your mind; if you let go of your mind, you will enjoy the present. Once readers accept this rule, Tolle’s words will help them stay in the present, away from negative emotions, boredom, and worry.

Tolle teaches readers to stop thinking about the past or worrying about the future by staying outside of the “thinking mind” and the “pain-body” of negative emotions. He explains that pain and problems do not exist in the now, and therefore, there is no sense being negative about the past or the future. Only the present moment exists and the only time that counts is NOW.

Tolle views personal relationships as a big hurdle on the way to spiritual enlightenment. He explores the nature of compassion and surrender in relationships. With Tolle’s help, readers can divorce themselves from past experiences and future expectations and start viewing relationships in the moment.

I found this book to be a perfect quide to happiness. Practicing Tolle’s simple steps for staying in the now guarantees conscious acceptance of one’s true self and ease in dealing with other people.

3 Stars Interesting
A recast of previously available knowledge in a slightly different format. The ideas are helpful even if not original.

5 Stars Finally Made It.
I’ve never read spirituality books before but I have read books on how to invest, how to improve your memory, how to look better, what foods to eat, what foods not to eat, what’s the best TV, best cars, it never ends…

Having grown up dirt poor, I always thought that I wanted to have what all the other kids had, a nice house, nice cars, nice clothes. And so that’s what I worked for. I thought that would make me happy. Well here I am with a nice house, nice cars, nice clothes, loving wife and kids but somehow I always needed more. I kept asking myself why am I not completely ecstatic with my current situation? Why do I not make enough money? Why doesn’t my wife give me enough attention? Why are my kids driving me crazy? Why am I never satisfied with my job? Even before I read this book I thought it strange that “happiness” is controlled by the outside, but why? When I read this book I found the answer that’s been at the back of my mind for years. Or should I say beyond my mind. It’s the greatest book I’ve ever read.

5 Stars One of those books that change your life forever!
I bought this book and I bought others for my friends. I keep it on my nightstand and take it everywhere. It’s an eye opener. It’s an awakening tool. I recommend it to anyone who truly wants to enjoy life as it is, feel alive and feel happy all the time regardless of the external circumstances.

4 Stars A Guide to Empower You to Change Your Life
The essence of the book: detach yourself from yourself.

I read somewhere that your worst enemy was yourself. For Tolle, it’s your mind; for him, “your mind” is a tyrant lurking behind your neck, seeking the right opportunity to torment you day in and day out; hustling you to live in the past or in the future. He advises that you should shut up this fiendish monster in your head. He claims people live less fulfilling lives all because of the noise the mind produces: choking you down; overtaking your willpower, your life. “You are not your mind,” he declares.

I must admit — after hearing for a long time about the wonderful and transforming power of the mind — that I was taken aback by Tolle’s thought — perhaps a little startled to find myself nodding yes, as I flipped pages after pages. The way he presents it: a fight between the heavenly Angel and the evil One on your shoulders, in your head (of course, Tolle’s insight made it out to be quite less humorous, even a bit pernicious if one fails to rein it). Control it, and you’re enlightened. Tolle explains in a Q/A format some of the most profound quests that have eluded humans for centuries. His pantheistic take on God might appear unsettling to some. However, most of the other topics touch on the do’s and don’ts you could probably find in most inspirational literatures.

Tolle goes further:

Consciousness: the Way Out of Pain; Moving Deeply Into the now; Mind Strategies for Avoiding the Now; The State of Presence; The Inner Body… and many more subjective topics. In general, he states that most of our ills exist because of our lack of knowledge on how to control our inner self, how to tame it into accepting “what is,” and surrendering beyond reproach.

This Leading Edge work by Esther and Jerry Hicks, who present The Teachings of Abraham, will help you understand every relationship you are currently involved in as well as every relationship you have ever experienced.

This book uncovers a myriad of false premises that are at the heart of every uncomfortable relationship issue, and guides you to a clear understanding of the powerful creative Vortex that has already assembled the relationships that you have desired. Abraham will show you how to enter that Vortex, where you will rendezvous with everything and everyone you have been looking for.

Abraham says: “It is our desire to help you to solve the mystery of those seemingly impossible relationships; to sort out the details of joyously sharing your planet with billions of others; to rediscover the beauty of your differences; and, most of all, to reestablish the most important relationship of all: your relationship with the Eternal, Non-Physical Source that is really you.

“It is our desire that you experience an enhanced appreciation of your planet; your body; your family; your friends; your enemies; your government; your systems; your food; your finances; your animals; your work and your play; your purpose; your Source; your Soul; your past, your future, and your present. . . .”

1 Star Returned it. Dissapointed.
If you believe that God is above the dualities, or “contrasts” as they call them, and that all creation including the dualities is created by this divine source, then you won’t appreciate this book at all. Sorry Ester and Jerry. It just doesn’t ring true.

5 Stars Excellent!
One of the very best I read. Love the question/answer part. A book of wisdom.

3 Stars Really Dry
I believe the content is good but the reading is very slow and dry. I understand from some reviews that the end of the book is better but good luck getting there. There are better books on the law of attraction.

What do you really want? The good news is that whatever it is, you can have it!The only thing is, attaining it is going to be a lot easier than you think and more fun than you can imagine! This is because the universe operates on the principle of Effortless Success: When you get really clear and honest about what you want, everything in the world conspires to help you get it.

Michael Neill is your personal coach on this CD program, guiding you through an engaging program of practical and proven strategies to get past the obstacles that keep you from living a deeply fulfilling and inspired life. An internationally renowned success coach, he shares the best of what he’s learned—about inspiration, motivation, well-being, relationships, finances, and more—from more than15 years of training thousands of people to have what they want and create a life that makes them go “Wow!”
Let him do the same for you . . . and you’ll experience more happiness and greater success than ever before!

5 Stars Original suggestions delivered in a helpful style
I discovered Michael Neill through my hayhouseradio membership (he features a weekly radio show), now he is one of my favorite authors. Michael doesn’t give you enough information to constitute a sales pitch, you get a valuable and applicable idea (he offers a daily tip free from his website) [...].

Example of an idea I found helpful was discerning the difference between the concept of procrastination and divine timing – the neat coincidences that help you out on a task that you do achieve but think you should have gotten to earlier.

I downloaded his 7 myths to success from his website and ordered his audio book (which comes with a workbook). He offers original ideas and I like his delivery. This author is worth checking out.

5 Stars Good stuff
I bought this cd set after listening to Michael’s radio show on Hay House radio. He is funny, humble, and infinitely wise. I have listened to these cds several times and there is so much info I get something entirely different from each listening.

I like especially how Michael talks about approaching our lives from the perspective that we’re stuck, not broken and just need a nudge to help us get back on track to where we want to go.

I highly recommend this cd set – there’s something for everyone

5 Stars This is an absolute must own!
This is such an amazing lecture!! Each time I listen to it I walk away with something valuable. My life has in fact gotten easier and I’m far more productive, organized and fun. My husband and kids have even noticed the difference.

5 Stars Give Yourself a New Life
Like most people I have read hundreds of self-help books and listened to endless CD sets promising to help me achieve my goals and dreams. And although a lot of them had great plans to follow, I just never seemed to move out of my comfort zone. I just laid down till the urge to do something went away. Or my feet were stuck and I just didn’t seem to move.

I turned 55 this year and decided I needed to move at least an inch out of my comfort zone toward my dreams. I came across the author when I was listening to Hay House Radio. His voice is very soothing and inspiring and his advice is spot on. He makes you responsible for what you want, rather than saying “Hi I got the program to end all programs.”

If you don’t have time to read, I strongly suggest you get the CD’s or download it to your M3P player. I have Effortless Success on my IPOD and it is six and a half hours of anecdotes and stories to help you get what you want in life and have a great time doing it. There is no pain in his process – only “Gee, why didn’t I do this before? It is a lot easier than I thought.”

Michael Neill got me off the couch and working toward my dreams. I feel confident I can accomplish completing several projects I have lined up for this year. The fear that kept me frozen in time is gone.

Give his books and this CD set a try. And if you like what you read and hear, visit his web site www.geniuscatalyst.com. You will be glad you did.

5 Stars Amazing self-development tools
Great product, this is the audio book that finally made med do my “to do” lists every evening. I have a clear view of the following day. I also

like the way Michael Neill deals with fear (as an obstacle).

I warmly recommend this 6 CD’s audio book to everyone who wants to improve their goal-setting skills. Every topic is explained in detail, so it is easy to follow the advice given and the methods. There is a really helpful booklet inside as well, Buy it now.

3 Stars Great Technique. Lousy Writing
Release Technique is a must-have to keep yourself sane in this insane world. Emotion feed the thought and that thought increase the same emotion. To kill the insane cycle, I am able to remove many nagging thoughts and voices by just removing the emotions behind each of them. This technique is faster than Emotion Freedom Technique and can apply anywhere.

If you believe in Law of Attraction and manifestation, you need Release Technique to control your feelings. Feeling is the key ingredient to manifesting things in your life. I used the technique to remove bad feelings in my life, thus solving all my problems easily and stop creating bad things in my life.

There are 2 points to take note.

First, you need to practice this every day for at least half hour to gain any benefit. It takes me a year to release many thoughts and quiet my mind. It varies person to person as I think it depends on how old you are and how many emotion burden you carry since birth.

Second, while Release Technique is helpful in quieting my mind, solving my problems and preventing bad things from happening, I got problem manifesting what I want. It needs other info like Law of Attraction. Using Release Technique or Law Of Attraction alone is like you eat a meal either a fork or a spoon only. It would be faster if you have use both.

Release Technique is great. I bought this book a year ago and I even went to its website to bought other Release Technique audio products. I only give 3 stars because although the Release Tech is great, the book is not well written. The author seems to have rushed through the writing and publishing. Better to get the audio products.

1 Star The Abundance Book
Mr. Cranes book appears to be taped material from a workshop, as a student of the Sedona Method I found it quite disappointing,

5 Stars A RELEASER WHO HAS FOUND SOMETHING BETTER!
I’ve been releasing with the AB book and cds for about 4 years now with great success. The book is worth every penny! That said however, I have found something better. It’s a amazingly simple and powerful technique I found while surfing youtube. I’m posting the video below for you all. I only wish someone had told me about this technique 4 years ago because not only is it easier, simpler, more powerful but it’s FREE!

[...]

5 Stars This is the True Secret
One sunny day, back in 1972, I was vacationing in a beach, in Africa, with my wife and little daughter. I love the sea and that day all was perfect: the sun exploded into a thousand tiny suns that shone till the horizon. We were alone; the closest person was a thousand meters away.In fact, I was in perfect peace, totally released. No problem occupying my mind, my chest and stomach were relaxed. This mood could not last and minutes later a thought arises in my mind: “would be nice to not have to leave tomorrow and be able to stay another week”.This thought, however, did not bother me minimally. I stayed released. I turned to my wife and asked her how much money would be necessary for us to stay another week. She replied: $ 500! This was a lot of money in 1972. Without the slightest stress,I stretched my arms back, buried my fingers in the sand and felt something touching the fingers of the left hand, under the sand.I grabbed it and was a $500 folded bill.

I have never forgotten this event. A true miracle! I did not ask anything. I did not visualize. I had never heard of the Law of attraction. I was just totally released! My energy and the energy of the universe were one and the same. And the miracle happened! This is what this book is about.

5 Stars I Highly Recommend The Book and Cd Set
This process has helped me more then anything else in my life. I highly recommend buying the Release Technique and CD Set.

I only have positive wonderful things to say about the process. Do it and you will see it works wonders.

It is true that the rich do get richer, and more plentiful. Around the world, there are almost 10 million millionaires, controlling an enormous pool of assets of some US$37 trillion.

Trends, similarities and differences in various regions around the world.

Innovative approaches to asset allocation and alternative investments.

The increasing role of philanthropy, the growing importance of inter-generational wealth transfer, and other emerging issues for HNWIs.

Robert J. McCann is Vice Chairman and President of Global Wealth Management at Merrill Lynch.

Bertrand Lavayssière is Managing Director of Global Financial Services for the Capgemini Group.

The rich do, on average, get richer and do so faster than other investors because their purchasing power and their access to the best thinking and innovative products gives them an advantage, an advantage that we hope to confer through the knowledge embodied in this book.
”From the Foreword, by Robert J. McCann and Bertrand Lavayssiè

On Globalization:

Globalization has been the transformational theme of the past six years in investing.
Larry Fink, CEO BlackRock

The risk is that there will be globalization of markets without a globalization of democracy and regulations… What’s the value of the Internet if you’re the only one on it?
”Jacques Attali, President PlaNet Finance

 On Asset Allocation:

Most HNWIs have become wealthy thanks to one or two success storie not asset allocation¦But once you have accumulated a certain amount of wealth you need to stop worrying about enhancing it, and start worrying about protecting it.
James Rothenberg, Chairman and Principal Executive Officer, Capital Research and Management

On Alternative Investments:

A majority of investors donât find the expected return-versus-risk ratio in the public stock and bond markets all that compelling¦They see alternative investments as a way to preserve wealth through absolute returns — which means seeking positive returns in both bull and bear markets while not being tied down to traditional performance benchmarks like the S&P 500 Index.
Ralph Schlosstein, Co-founder, BlackRock.

On Financial Technology:

Because financial markets are entirely information-based, technology will drive the future of financial markets.
Charles Simonyi, CEO Intentional Software, Former Head of Microsoft’s Application Software Group, International Space Tourist

On Philanthropy:

As recently as thirty years ago, too many philanthropists were content to simply write a check and be done with it…[But] today’s philanthropists are able to take a long-term view…they have been able to plan and act with an efficiency, agility and attention to issues of accountability that the state has either overlooked, or been unwilling or incapable of addressing.
Never has it been more important to read Wealth: Grow It, Protect It, Spend It, and Share It. More of us have created more wealth today than ever before; managing our retirement assets is increasingly our own responsibility; and America is bracing for the largest intergenerational transfer of wealth in history. Added to this are the recent financial scandals which have left us confused about who to trust for good investment and wealth management advice. And because most advisors are specialists, the critical task of integrating the varied aspects of wealth management falls on our shoulders. Written by Stuart Lucas, an experienced investment professional, Carnation Company heir, and now manager of his family’s fortune, Wealth: / Helps you to integrate the financial and family aspects of wealth management into an actionable, coherent whole; / Provides the tools and information you need to take charge of your wealth, so that your advisors and your money are working toward achieving your goals; / Addresses family relationships and values, preparing your children for affluence, the motives of advisors, spending, philanthropy, taxes, estate planning, investment strategies, and more. In short, Wealth is the definitive guide to optimizing your financial future. The lessons of Wealth apply whether you have $100,000 or $100,000,000, whether your goal is to safeguard assets to last your lifetime or to create a financial legacy that will continue for generations.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Stuart’s life lessons.
Stuart has laid out a valuable book for all who will come into an inheritance. There are many lessons, and examples that can be a road map to what your family should do when this event takes place. There are so many ways to go wrong and make poor decisions when preparing to receive wealth that a parent or family member leaves for you. This book helps to guide you in what needs to be done, so that you can bless your family and others with what you are given.

3 Stars Effective albeit plodding guidebook on wealth management
Author Stuart Lucas is an heir to the Carnation family fortune, so he knows a little something about wealth. This book is a useful, albeit somewhat plodding, handbook on managing wealth. It covers almost all the fundamentals except how to make it. It’s a bit like the old Steve Martin routine, “How to Make a Million Dollars and Never Pay Taxes.”

“Ok, first – get a million dollars….and then …

For those who do not inherit their fortunes, means other than inheritance will have to drive the ability to arrive at a level of wealth, enabling the tips and techniques that Lucas discusses. For those who want to better organize their finances, plan their estates or who experience a “liquidity event,”

“Wealth” is an effective guide to picking a financial advisor and assessing one’s own financial aims.

5 Stars Good Overview of How One Wealthy Family Manages its Money
In “Wealth,” Lucas gives a good overview of how his family manages its money. His family is a little different than most, in that it had a liquidity event that led to about $1 billion in cash for the family.

As one reviewer pointed out, the author can get wordy at times, but overall the book is well written and approachable.

If you have less than $1 million of investable assets this book might not be the best starting place for advice as the method his family uses requires quite a bit of capital to pursue effectively.

Lucas’s use of real-life examples is good, as is his view of his generation being stewards for future Lucas generations. There is a good chapter on how to use wealth to help society, which is a topic that is all too often overlooked in wealth management books.

3 Stars wealth for the family
This book is very thorough, but I thought it dealt too much in family wealth for wealthy people and not enough for personal wealth. The title does not reflect this.

4 Stars Good for the Basics
Worthwhile so long as you skim past the biographical prose and get to the basic nuggets of financial planning offered. A good basic introduction to wealth management for those that have no background working with private bankers, financial planners and/or selecting their own investments. Not a great book for learning how to invest nor where to find qualified investment professionals.

Buy/More Info

How did Hillary Clinton, Michael Bloomberg, Jeffrey Bezos, David Sedaris, and Macy Gray get where they are today – and how can you get the same edge?

Success is a collection of insights from more than 400 remarkably successful people in all fields – including business, politics, entertainment, and the arts. Here are quotes and passages from J.K. Rowling and Federico Fellini on getting started, and Steve Jobs and Tiger Woods on passion. Here, too, are George Lucas and Bill Clinton on goals, Katie Couric and George Foreman on competition, and Edmund Hillary and Carly Fiorina on leadership.

The high achievers quoted here share one crucial belief: Success is possible as long as there’s passion. If you know where you want to be but not how to get there, use Success as your guide.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars If you like quotes for papers this is good reference material…
This was a gift from someone. I usually go looking for specific quotes on topics when writing a paper, or giving a speech, and this book is a good compilation of quotes pertaining to achieving success in your life, or as to what constitutes success. This includes sections on topics like competitiveness, aggressiveness, setting up goals, etc. I usually enjoy reading books like these through when I get them so I have an idea of what quotes there are, by whom, and where I can find them. It’s a lot easier to find quotes online nowdays, and so I don’t need to have books around like this, but it is always a useful reference to have laying around.

Karen Sadler

5 Stars Success by Pincott
This book reads like a Profiles in Success story. There are

hundreds of bright musings by contemporaries from John Stuart Mill

to Aristotle Onassis to Albert Einstein. John Stuart Mill discussed the interconnectedness of ideas. Aristotle Onassis said that success comes from knowing something that no-one else knows.

In the case of Aristotle Onassis, he purchased fleets of surplus

United States carriers for practically nothing. Then, he turned

around and utilized them to deliver world oil. Albert Einstein

labelled work as “x”, play as “y” and silence as “z”.

This volume is perfect for students of literature, journalism,

historical buffs and generalists everywhere.

5 Stars Succinct & Inspiring
This book will lift you up whenever you feeling down. In life, too many negativities are being thrown at us daily. This book will serve as a reminder that our successful forefathers have gone through the exact trying times as us before they saw light at the end of tunnel. Take life challenges at the chin, fight strong, it ain’t over till you say so.
