Numerous books have been written about overcoming the habit of procrastination and the stress that results from having neglected tasks accumulating on your to-do list–a to-do list whose very creation itself is possibly another by-product of procrastination. Certainly the irony of a book written for habitual procrastinators is not lost on you, with the obvious chicken-and-egg poser of how to overcome procrastination in order to read a book on how to overcome procrastination.

The main theme of most of those books boil down to three words: Just Do It. Of course, that is also the Nike slogan, and a kind interpretation of why the authors abstained from distilling their 300- or 400-word books down to 3 or 4 words would be that they feared legal retribution from Nike.

So how do you overcome procrastinating tendencies and “Just Do It”? The answer might be found in the quick retort of the couch potato: I Just Do Not Want To Do It. Attacking the problem logically, one would think that overcoming the vice of procrastination is simply a matter of learning to switch on your wants and desires. Clearly if you wanted to do something, there would be no procrastination with which to contend. Therefore, what you are seeking is a way to trick the mind into wanting to do something. Maybe you can find a way of doing this if you examine some of the things that the mind naturally leans toward and wants to do. You may thereby be able to find a useful principle that will enable you to live up to the battle cry of Nike.

It is a basic principle of both theoretical psychology and common sense alike that you want to do that which makes you feel good. After all, there is no great effort against mental inertia, no epic battle against the forces of sluggishness when it comes to sitting down for a gourmet meal and fine wine; nor does procrastination rear its head when it comes to enjoying a good movie or a moment of intimacy with a loved one.

With the exception of some technological or medical breakthrough, doing the ironing or balancing the checkbook will never take on the tremendous appeal of more sensuous and sensual enjoyments. Where does that leave you?

As any used-car salesman will tell you, if you cannot hide the unappealing feature of the Volvo, put some lipstick on the pig by throwing in a chrome CD player. And when it comes to procrastination, you have many gold toilet seats at your disposal. Simply take that chore which is naturally uninspiring and let it piggyback on something much more exciting.

One way of creating a symbiotic relationship between that which you would love to do and that which you would love to toss into a top hat for a vanishing act at a magic show is to employ the principle of positive reinforcement. Make your enjoyment of that which you would love to do conditional upon the performance of that which you would rather pass on to that ever-faithful servant of the chronic procrastinator, Tomorrow. Your mom knew all about this clever principle when she made your ice cream dessert contingent upon the finishing of your spinach.

A deep part of the human brain understands only two phenomena: pleasure and pain. We have already discussed how to associate pleasure with the performance of that which you would keep putting off for another day, left to your own devices. The flip side of the cranial coin is associating the idea of pain with the non-performance of your chore. Introduce dreadful consequences for a failure to act. One extreme method of doing this might be to have someone you trust help you record a video of yourself in a very embarrassing situation. Then if you fail to “Just Do It”, your video will grace the pages of YouTube or the inboxes of your coworkers.

A hybrid approach combining a pleasure factor with a pain factor may be your best bet for overcoming the paralyzing and stress-producing habit of procrastination.

If you are unhappy with your life and you want a change, you know that making any change to your life is not easy. It does require sufficient amount of effort on your part. The only way to change your life is to change the way you think about things that happen in your life. You have to change your perception of life.

Here are some steps that you can take to move yourself closer to your dreams and desires. You are just 11 steps away from living the life you desire.

The first step toward making any kind of changes in your life is to want to change. You must desire change and be willing to take the necessary steps toward change. Know what you want to change and start taking steps toward those changes. Be open-minded and be willing to try new things. Be open to new ideas.

Make a written list of things you want to change. Another important thing is to be aware of the exact changes you want to make. Merely wishing to change your life is not enough. You can make a list of the changes you would like to see and work towards achieving them accordingly. Always read what is on your list at least twice a day. This helps you to have a clear vision of the desired changes.

Stop complaining, it never helps. When you complain, you are stuck focusing on the negative. Instead, focus on the desired changes and this will help move you toward the desired results.

Be willing to take risks. Whenever you embark on a new project, there is risk involved. Trying to make any kind of changes in your life involves risk; therefore you must be willing to take some risk.

Live each day as your last. Enjoy the moment. Stop tormenting yourself about the past and stop worrying about the future. Worrying stresses you out and when you are stressed out, you are not effective in dealing with problem. Your power is always in the “Now”. If you do the best you can in each and every moment, the future will take care of itself. When you live in the moment, you will tend to be more calm and at peace; thus better equipped to handle any problem.

Let go of any emotional baggage from the past. Be willing to forgive and forget any mishap in the past, so that you can move on. Bearing grudges and keeping count of all the negative things that happened to you in the past is like swimming across the shore with a bag of bricks tied to your leg. Let go of the baggage and you could swim across the shore with much ease.

When you start seeing some results in your effort toward any change, reward yourself. This helps keep you motivated.

It is important to write down the down in detail the plan that you need to follow through to help you make changes. For example, if you want to make changes in your body weight, write down all the necessary steps that you need to take to achieve the desired change. The plan would be something like, exercise 30 minutes per day for five days per week, reduce your calorie intake by cutting down on fat, etc. Make a detail plan for bringing about the desired changes.

At times, when you are making changes in your life toward a new goal, you may have hard time dealing with stuff. It would be a good idea to get support from your loved ones. Ask friends or family members to support you through changes. This helps make the transition much more bearable. The support of friends and family can really help you through changes in life. Remember, it is alright to ask for help when you need it.

Change the way you look at things. Look at the positive things in life. You will be amazed at how changing your perspective can help you change your life drastically. You have no control over many things that happened in your life, but you do have control over how you look at things that happened. There is a saying, “When the way you look at thing change, the thing you look at changes.”

If needed, seek professional help. Sometimes in going through changes in your life, it might be difficult for you to cope will all the stresses that follow. A counselor or a therapist can help you deal with stress and adapt to changes in a healthy way.

The final and most important step is, you must never quit and keep persisting until you achieve your desired outcome. Remember, “A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins.”

You have probably heard of hypnosis before and think of it as something that you have seen on television, where someone is put into a deep trance and then they are suddenly able to remember things that happened to them in the past.

There are actually several different kinds of hypnosis and one of the most interesting for regular people is what is known as conversational hypnosis. This is a method by which, through talking to someone you induce a trance like state in him, consequently you can change his mind or the way he feels about an issue or a situation.

The idea behind conversational hypnosis is that everyone goes into trances throughout the day, perhaps when doing something sort of mindless like waiting for a bus, or when doing something that takes a lot of concentration like studying for an exam. If we can mindfully access these trance states we can actually plant suggestions in other peoples’ minds.

This of course is not a simple thing to do. It takes a lot of training to be able to build the kind of rapport with someone that is necessary to get them into a trance state and to properly build on that through confusion and suggestion while they’re in the trance state, which is what really allows the suggestion to be planted and the change of mind to take place.

Even if this is not something you can do yourself without a lot of training from someone experienced in the field, it is a very cool idea that just opens up to us the amazing power of the mind. Your mind can actually be trained through the power of suggestion to change a long-held opinion, break a habit or even just change your attitude and make you feel more positive.

It’s really powerful to understand this and to think about how you can use this power of positive persuasion in your own life. If you think about it, the steps of conversational hypnosis can be used on yourself, though maybe not as dramatically, to change the way you think about things.

Consider how you feel about a particular issue. Maybe you think your life is going nowhere fast. First you build rapport with yourself by stating or writing down everything that you think proves your point of view. Then confuse the issue by turning your current idea on its head. Suggest to yourself that some other idea might in fact be the truth, rather than the ideas you have been holding before.

This trick might not work instantly to change your mind since you probably won’t be in a true trance state when you practice this exercise, but doing it consistently every few days can allow you to see that your idea of the way things are is not the only way of looking at things, and perhaps you have had the wrong idea all along.

If you are like most people, then you have not learned to deal with negative emotions in a positive manner. Some of you might try to deny the negative emotions or completely block them off by using alcohol or drug. Some might deal with the emotions by using food, either by eating or not eating when you are confronted by negative feelings. Some act on their emotions almost spontaneously, saying or doing things that they will ultimately regret. None of these reactions ever led to positive outcomes.

You must realize that while you cannot control what happen to you, you can certainly control how you react to the situation. Your reaction is not a direct result of the situation but the interpretation of the situation. On a particular day when you are feeling self confident and happy, a particular situation has a totally different impact on you as on a day that you are feeling insecure and having self-doubt. Your reaction to a particular situation is directly related to your sense of self-worth. To manage your emotional response effectively, you need to know what situation trigger what kind of emotional response in you and to what degree; and how you would like to be prepared to handle them.

If you understand the four core emotions, anger, sadness, fear and joy that affect everyone, you can work on moderating and managing them. You can feel more in control of yourself and more confident of handling various situations.

Every day you go through one of these four emotions. It is important that you identify the emotions that you are feeling. Using words to express clearly what you feel will help you relieve yourself of pent-up emotion. It will help clarify what is important to you and what is not. This enables others to understand you better.

You should start listening to your emotions. Identify the emotions and understand the intensity of your emotions. If you have a real strong emotion about something, you can relieve yourself of the pent-up emotion. Try to understand what the emotion and the intensity of the emotion mean. Once you understand the emotion, work through it. Find release for the different emotion.

If you learn to manage your emotions well, you can lead a happier life. Managing your emotions efficiently can help boost your self-esteem. It will also help improve your relationship with others.

The going thought is that you must save money wherever you can and you must not borrow or lend money because you will not have enough.

Another approach to the recession is to use the law of attraction to get the things that you want. This may sound crazy but according to the movie, The Secret, this is an ancient idea that many people have used throughout their lives.

What Is The Law of Attraction?

The law of attraction simply stated says that “like attacks like”. It says that we live in a universe where whatever we put out in terms of our vibration brings back exactly what we ask for and we get it relatively quickly.

This means that if we put out negative vibes (energy) by saying something like, “This is going to be a really bad day!” The universe accommodates us by sending us things that makes it a bad day.

Some people do not believe this because they think that life cannot be that simple, but when you think about it you can see how it works. As an example, you can decide that you are going to have a really good day and you have one. You can decide that when you go somewhere you will find a parking space and you do.

This may seem like coincidence but according to anyone who practices the law of attraction in earnest this is how you create the day that you want.

How Does The Law of Attraction Work?

The law of attraction works by making you conscious of what type of energy (vibes) you are putting out into the atmosphere. The point is to make sure that anything you put out, especially in using your emotions, is something you really want.

As an example, if you want more money during the recession all you have to do is focus on the fact that you are more abundant and you have lots of money. You do not need to know where it is coming from or get tangled up in the “how” it will come to you. You just sit with the confidence that you have more. The universe will “rearrange itself” to accommodate what you want.

How To Get Through The Recession

Whatever you put most of your focus on is what you are bringing to you. If you only focus on not having enough, the universe will accommodate you so you do not have enough. To get through the recession you have to focus on the fact that you have all your needs met.

If you focus on thoughts like, “I have all I need,” “My needs are always met” or “I have all the money I need right now” your needs will always be accommodated. Although this may seem simple, humans always complicate it. Using the law of attraction can bring more into your life now, if you utilize it deliberately.

Stress is a normal part of life. Certain amount of stress is necessary to push you toward your goal. Without the stress of a deadline, you may never finish a project. Without the stress of a competition, you feel no need to improve. Without stress, you would go about aimlessly without any goals in mind.

It is impossible to completely eliminate stress from your life. You just need to manage stress to make sure that there is just enough stress to motivate you toward your goal. Optimal level of stress will motivate but not overwhelm you. You need to manage your stress level to make sure it does not get out of hand.

You are a unique creature with unique requirements; therefore no single level of stress is optimal for every person. Certain event might be distressing for one person while having no effect on the other person. Each person can tolerate different amount of stress before experiencing stress symptoms such as:

	Falling Hair

	Anxiety Attack

	Irritated Bowel disorder

	Headache

	Loss of Appetite

	Increase in appetite

	Etc

When you experience any of these stress symptoms, you have gone beyond your optimal stress level.

Here are some ways that you can manage your stress more effectively:

You must be aware of the source of your stress. You must be aware your emotional and physical reactions to the source of stress. Try to identify when the stress begins, what triggers it, and how your body and mind react to it.

Once you have identified the source of your stress, determine if you can avoid it. Is there anything you can do to reduce the intensity of your stress level? Can some changes be made to improve the situation? Determine what you can and cannot change.

Try to reduce the intensity of your reaction to the situation that cause you stress. Are you overreacting? Are you exaggerating the importance of the situation, making it seems dire than it really is? Are you overestimating the importance of the stressful situation, and underestimating your own power to handle it? You need to reevaluate the whole situation. Look at it from different angles. Things are never as bad as you imagined them to be.

Take good care of your physical health. The stronger the body, the more stress it can handle. Eat a well-balanced diet, exercise, and get enough sleep. Take a break whenever you feel overwhelm. Meditate 15 minutes per day can help reduce your stress level

Take good care of your emotional health. Develop some mutually supportive friendships/relationships. People tend to manage stress more successfully with the support of good friends and family. Love and be kind to yourself.

Life has its ups and downs. You do have the ability to handle what life throws at you. Just remember to lighten up and enjoy the beauty of life.

It is only when everything seems to be going wrong is when you begin to want to improve yourself. When you are faced with painful situation, you begin to have reason to want to change yourself.

Being heavily in debt and unable to pay your bill remind you of your inability to earn good income. Being humiliated give you the drive to speak up and fight for yourself. It might even make you do whatever is needed to improve yourself and prevent you from ever getting humiliated again.

A bitter experience, a friend’s tragic story or an inspiring movie might give you enough “push” to start improving your life. Right amount of motivation is essential to long lasting self improvement. With all the bad things going on in the world, how do you keep yourself motivated?

Here are some tips to help you stay motivated:

Have faith in yourself. Believe in your innate ability.

Dream big and work toward its achievement.

Visualize your intention. The clearer your goal, the more likely you are to achieve it.

Be a doer, not just a dreamer.

Don’t ever give up. Whenever you seem to be failing, think of it as a stepping stone toward success.

Be around positive people. They can help keep you motivated. Avoid negative people at all cost.

Treasure your family and friends. Their support can help motivate you.

Have discipline. Write out what you need to do each day to move you toward your goal and do it. Do not make excuses.

Read motivational books and listen to motivational tapes. Attend motivational seminars, so you can be around like-minded people.

Be a part of a mastermind group.

Look at things from every angle. There are always some valuable lessons that can be learned from every experience.

Take good care of yourself. Keep yourself healthy. It is very difficult to stay motivated if you are sick.

There will be failures along the way, but if you never give up you will eventually fulfill your dream. If you quit, you will never find out what you might be missing. Sometimes people quit just when they are one step away from the fulfillment of their dream.

Always give more that what is expected from you. Go the extra mile.

Ignore people who are always pulling you down.

It is important that you enjoy yourself. Life is supposed to be fun.

Do what you are passionate about. When you are passionate, you will be motivated to keep going in spite of adversity.

Stop procrastinating. When you set out to do something, do it right away. This will help keep you motivated.

Be yourself. You are a unique being with unique ability.

Always reward yourself for a job well done. This will motivate you to keep moving on toward your goals.

Live each day as though it is your last day on earth. This will keep everything in perspective.

Success is important and it takes work to reach. Success can mean different things to different people and here are some tips that you can apply to reach success.

Tips to being successful:

You need to have a goal and a plan to achieve that goal. If you don’t, how would you track your progress?

You need to have courage. You need courage to move out of your comfort zone. You need courage to go for your dream even if your friends and family disapprove. You need courage to keep moving toward your goal even though everything seems to be working against you.

You need to have faith in yourself, in your God-given talent. You need to believe that you have what it takes. When you have confident in yourself, others will have confident in you.

You need to have positive mental attitude. People with positive outlook generally get further in life than those with negative outlook.

You need to persevere. Never ever give up. Success does not come easily. There will be numerous occasions in life when you will be confronted with seeming failures. People who persevere despite seeming failures are the people who would ultimately succeed.

You need to be doing what you love. When you are passionate about what you do, you will be unstoppable.

Find someone who has succeeded at what you wanted to do and model his success. If you can get such a person to mentor you, that’s even better.

Be willing to learn whatever skills that are needed for the accomplishment of your goal. You need to be improving your skills on a regular basis. You need to be constantly educating yourself.

You need to get past your fear of failures. There will be many failures along the way, but if you keep working toward your goal, success is inevitable.

To have great success, you need to dream big and have lofty aspiration.

You need to stay motivated. You can read motivation books or listen to tapes by motivational speakers. You can attend seminars. When you start feeling a little down and doubt starts creeping in, you should turn to these motivational tools to keep you on track.

When you accomplish any goal you set, be sure to reward yourself for a job well done.

There will be time when you find yourself lacking some skills that are needed for you to succeed. This is the perfect time for you to network with others. Seek help when you need it.

Keep track of your progress. Take notes of what’s working and what’s not working so you can adjust your game plan.

It is a good idea to consult with others every now and then. This should be done with someone you trust and who is himself successful. You might be blinded by your own flaws. Be open to criticism. Once in a while you do need a reality check.

Be grateful for all your accomplishments as well as your failures. Failure is a stepping stone to success because it teaches you what’s not working. Gratitude is the attitude that will help keep you humble and move you toward success.

Make sure that you make the journey toward your goal exciting and adventurous. This will encourage you to keep moving toward your goal.

Make the most of everyday and accomplish something. Live each day as though it were your last.

Use these tips to aid you toward success. There is no better satisfaction than being successful. Take action and succeed.

Are you living a life filled with passion and motivation? Or are you going through life doing the day to day routine without any sense of purpose or passion for what you are doing?

If you are frustrated, and yearning to do something more, to be more, or to go places, you have to realize that the only thing holding you back is your Fear. So what could you do?

There are steps that you can take to motivate yourself. There are steps that you can follow to start living your life with more passion.

The very first thing to do is to identify your goal posts. If you are dissatisfy with your life, you certainly do not want to be where you are right now in 5 years time; but do you know where you want to be? Where do you want to be 10 years from now or even a year from now?

A lot of people have hard time setting their goals for even a year let alone for 5 years. Some people are afraid that they may never achieve the goals they set for themselves. Very few people dream big. They fear disappointment. Without setting a goal, you can never truly work towards one. You should never underestimate the importance of having specific goals and working towards them.

Most successful people write down their goals and work continuously toward them. Successfully working toward a goal and achieving it can prove to be a tremendous motivating factor. You will have a sense of purpose as you work to overcome the obstacles and the adversities in the pursuant of your goals. Once you achieved your goal, you will have a sense of fulfillment.

Begin right now to give yourself time to plan out your goals. It might be difficult at first, but it will help redefines your life. Outline all your important goals and a time line to achieve them.

Let’s look at goal destinations. Goal destinations are targets that you can certainly achieve with the right amount of effort.

Make lists of all you want to achieve in every aspect of your life–personal, professional, relationships. You may want to lose weight. You may want to buy a new home for your family. You may want to take your family to Europe for a summer vacation.

Once you have a list of goals, it is crucial that you make them more specific. Instead of saying ‘lose weight’, refine it to ‘lose 15 lbs by Dec 25th’. Make sure that each goal is a specific end-goal in itself. Some goal can be easily achieved in few months. Other goals might take longer. It is important that you are realistic in setting the time line. Do not set yourself up to fail.

Planning how to achieve your goals can be intense but also the most satisfying step. Here is the step-by-step plan for each of your specific goal.

Write down each goal on a piece of paper. Make sure it is written in one sentence at the top of the paper. It should be clear and simple.

For each goal, write down whatever is required for the accomplishment of the goal. In addition, write down the obstacle–what is holding you back from reaching the goal.

Sometimes you need to accomplish some smaller goals before you can achieve the bigger goal. Be sure to write down all these smaller goals as parts of the bigger goal. For example, to vacation in Italy you will need x number of dollars. You will also need to get information on all the places you plan to visit. You may need to study some basic Italian. These are the smaller goals that should be listed under the bigger goal–the trip to Italy.

You will need to list steps that are needed to achieve your goals. You need to identify the kind of action you need to take. All these steps are your checklists and your way of verifying how you are progressing towards your goal destinations.

Write down the specific date for the completion of each goal. If an exact date cannot be specify, try to state a time frame. For example, learning to play the guitar and being able to play a certain song within three months.

After following the steps above, be sure to specify things that need to be done in the next day, next week, next month and then the next year to get you closer to your goal destination.

Once you have specified things that need to be done each day, each week, each month and each year, keep track of your progress. Cross out the things you have accomplished from your lists. See if you are on track. If there are things that had to be postponed because of various compulsions, make sure you make time to get it done so you would not be falling behind your schedule.

It generally takes years to accomplish anything significant in your life. The important thing is not to lose sight of your goal. Everything can be accomplished one step at a time. Each small step gets you closer to your goal destination.

Keep your eyes on the goal so you would not lose focus. If your goal is what you are passionate about, you will be motivated to get up every morning filled with energy. Each smaller goal you accomplished will make it easier for you to aim for higher goal.
